File Checksum Calculator
Compute the checksum of a file with SHA-1, SHA-256, SHA-384, SHA-512 or MD5, entirely in your browser using the Web Crypto API. Files never leave your device.
Hash a sample file
Hashes a small built-in sample file (“hello world”) and shows its SHA-256, SHA-512, SHA-1 and MD5 checksums.
For demonstration, this attaches a file named example.txt so you can see all algorithms computed at once.
FAQ
What is a checksum?
A checksum is a fixed-size value computed from a file’s contents. Any change to the file produces a completely different checksum, so you can verify a file wasn’t corrupted or tampered with during download.
SHA-256 vs MD5 — which should I use?
Use SHA-256 (or stronger). MD5 is fast but has known collision weaknesses and is unsuitable for security verification; use it only when you must match a legacy value.
Does the file leave my device?
No. The file is read and hashed entirely in your browser using the Web Crypto API. It is never uploaded anywhere.
How do I verify a downloaded file?
Compare the checksum here against the one the publisher provides on its official download page. If they match, the file arrived intact and unmodified.
